Some Missouri residents may soon have the opportunity to apply for property tax relief, thanks to state legislation, Senate Bill 190, passed last year. This relief program, available in several counties including Greene and Christian, aims to offer financial support by freezing future property tax bills for eligible seniors.
Eligibility for Property Tax Relief in Greene and Christian Counties
The property tax relief program allows eligible seniors in Greene and Christian counties to freeze their future property tax bills at the amount owed in the year they become eligible. Any tax amount exceeding the “frozen” portion will be waived, providing significant savings for seniors.
While there has been some confusion regarding the implementation of this legislation at the county level, both Greene and Christian counties are moving forward with it. Additionally, a follow-up bill, Senate Bill 756, has been proposed to address gaps left by SB 190. If approved, this bill will expand eligibility to all seniors aged 62 and above, rather than limiting it to those who qualify for Social Security benefits. However, this bill still awaits approval.
To qualify for the property tax relief, seniors must be eligible for Social Security retirement benefits, own or have an equitable interest in a homestead, and pay property tax on that homestead. The property must serve as the primary residence, and only one primary residence can qualify for the relief, regardless of the property’s assessed value.
How to Apply for Missouri Property Tax Relief
Greene County residents can find the application online on the County Clerk’s website or pick it up from the County Clerk’s office. Applicants must complete the application, attach all required documents, and have it signed in the presence of a notary.
Completed applications must be submitted by September 30, either in person or by mail to the Greene County Clerk’s Office (940 N. Boonville Ave., Room 113, Springfield, MO 65802). Alternatively, they can be submitted electronically via email to propertytaxcredit@greenecountymo.gov. Once submitted, authorities will review the application to determine eligibility, and applicants will be notified if their application is approved.
For Christian County residents, the application process is similar, but the deadline to apply is June 30. Since June 30 falls on a Sunday, the final day to submit applications in person is June 28.
